Joseph Haydn - As a prelude to the many celebrations around the world planned to mark the bicentenary of the death of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), we are presenting our own very special Festival in Vienna in November 2008.
Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau in rural Austria. As a child of eight he studied music. His talents were such that he very soon came to the notice of the many aristocratic families in Vienna whose patronage was so important to struggling musicians. In 1761 he joined the Court of the Esterhazy family whose extensive lands included two grand palaces. Haydn continued in the post of Capellmeister to the family for the next thirty years during which time he wrote most of his most famous works.
In the later years of his life, Haydn enjoyed enormous fame and celebrity and travelled to London on two occasions. He ended his life in Vienna, where he lived in what is today known as the Haydnhaus, now a museum devoted to the life and works of this great composer.
Today, Haydn is revered as the man who invented the string quartet and even now, two hundred years on, his quartets are used as the benchmark by which to judge others. This alone is reason to celebrate this great man; however, when we consider his
symphonies, masses, trios, sonatas and operas, every music lover should remember Haydn the composer, and join in their own celebration of his achievements.

There can be no better destination to celebrate the life of Joseph Haydn than in his native Austria. Staying in Vienna for the duration of the tour our Haydn Festival will include concerts at the Haydnhaus in the centre of Vienna and also in the Esterhazy Palace at Eisenstadt.
We will visit the house where Haydn, the son of a wheelwright, was born in Rohrau and we will
spend the day in Eisenstadt. Here we will see the composer's simple house, the place where he worked and his mausoleum. Lunch will be included at Rust, a delightfully picturesque village on the shores of Lake Neusiedl.
In Vienna we will visit the Hofburg, the seat of the Hapsburgs, where we can see the State Apartments and the Treasury. We will see the houses where some of Vienna's great composers lived and worked and go to the magnificent art collection at the Kunsthistoriches Museum.
|
 |
We will also visit the magnificent house and private art collection of the Liechtenstein family and go to the Leopold Museum to see the impressive collection of works by Austrian artists. There will free time on this Haydn music tour to enjoy Vienna independently on some days.
|
The Vienna State Opera is one of the top five opera houses in the world, every season presenting a staggering number of operas, each cast to the highest level. The programme for the Vienna State Opera 2008/9 season will be announced in the spring of 2008 and we will write to you as soon as we receive it.
Join us in Vienna for our own exclusive series of private chamber concerts which will be given both in the house where Haydn lived in Vienna towards the end of his life and in the glorious Empire Saal at the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt.

| The Navarras are currently Junior Fellows at the RNCM and have been resident quartet at the Britten-Pears School. Their flourishing career takes them to many parts of the world and they give regular performances in the UK at such prestigious venues as Wigmore Hall and Aldeburgh. The Navarra Quartet will present a brilliant compendium of Haydn' s string quartets, creator and unrivalled master of the genre. They will also perform Haydn' s delightful early quintet 'Der Geburtstag' and Mozart' s sublime C major quintet K515 together with violist Simon Rowland-Jones. |
Simon Rowland-Jones was the founder violist of the Chilingirian Quartet and for many years played with the Nash Ensemble and the Villiers Piano Quartet. He made his début solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 1979. Solo recordings include the complete works for viola and piano of Ernest Bloch and Benjamin Dale, a CD of works by Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann and the Bach Cello Suites from his own transcription. Peters Edition published his Bach transcription in 1997 and subsequently
commissioned him to make a new critical/performing edition of the Haydn String Quartets. Most of the edition is already published and will be completed in 2008. Simon Rowland-Jones has been teaching viola and chamber music in conservatoires since 1980 and is currently at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester . He also taught for some years at the Yehudi Menuhin School. As a composer he received lessons from Nadia Boulanger . He writes mainly chamber music and music for viola. He is co-director of the North Norfolk Music Festival.

Julia Cload's Haydn CDs for Meridian Records were singled out in the Haydn Issue of the Piano Magazine as "the most lastingly illuminating." "Like Barenboim's, her playing is in the best sense rather old-fashioned, somewhat reminiscent of Edwin Fischer , Wilhelm Kempff and Sviatoslav Richter...". Julia studied at the Royal College of Music in London and the Liszt Academy in Budapest, and now lives in France with her actor husband Nicolas Hawtry. She leads a busy performing career playing as soloist with some of Europe' s finest orchestras as well as giving numerous recitals. Julia has for a long time now dedicated the greater part of her working life to two composers, Bach and Haydn, and is well on the way to recording the complete Haydn Keyboard Sonatas. The sonatas number over fifty, composed during Haydn' s forty most productive years, and Julia will be performing a fascinating chronological cross section of these startlingly original works. She will also play several pieces by Liszt including, with Nicolas Hawtrey, the haunting melodrama 'The Sad Monk' for solo piano and narrator.
