‘Landscapes with Attitude’ is an exciting new departure for Holts and designed especially for those of you who are enthusiastic photographers and who would like to spend time photographing some of the most challenging landscapes imaginable, the Somme fields where those battles raged ninety years ago are still a living witness to those awful events and this tour will enable you to reflect upon that history in a unique and very personal manner.
Your guide on this photography holiday will be photographer Mike St Maur Sheil who is currently engaged in documenting the landscapes of the Western Front [www.westernfrontphotography.com] and his recent exhibition "Fields of Battle - Flanders 1917" was described by Professor Richard Holmes as "Magnificent". | ||

We are limiting the numbers on this photography tour to ensure that Mike has time to work with you all in the places he knows best and he will drive you in a mini bus instead of the usual large coach. You will go with him to catch the dawn light in the hidden places of these first world war battlefields. You will follow the light as it crosses over the land and you will watch the going down of the sun. In between you will talk about photography and how best to reflect in your work the transformation from battlefields "of torn earth, barbed wire, litter and dead trees" to a land "of singing larks and serenely flowing rivers" whose very shape preserves those memories in a landscape of peace and beauty. This is not a tour of crosses and cemeteries: it will be a very practical photographic workshop amidst the Somme battlefields and to enable you to better express the emotions we all experience on the WW1 fields of battle in exciting and dramatic images. |
