Munich - The Rise & Fall of National Socialism
3 - 7 September 2008
In 1918 it seemed impossible that a resurgent Germany could ever emerge phoenix-like from the ashes of defeat and national ruin. However, by the mid-1930s Adolf Hitler's National Socialist or Nazi Party had imposed a "New Order" within the Fatherland that offered the vision of German supremacy across the globe for the next thousand years. At that time many German people hailed Hitler "the Führer" as a latter-day Messiah who was leading them into a "Promised Land". However, the dream turned into the nightmare of "Total War", which resulted in even greater destruction and national humiliation. Our tour examines the evolution of one of the most powerful and yet diabolical movements in history alongside the reasons for its ultimate downfall.

Based in Munich, we focus on the first touring day within the City and those places most associated with the rise of Hitler, National Socialism and Nazism, such as the Feldherrnhalle, where the "Putsch" of November 1923 failed, the Königsplatz, which was the centre of the Nazi web for many years and the site of the infamous "Munich Agreement" in 1938, and the Marienplatz, where the young Adolf Hitler spent much time plotting his future. After lunch in Munich centre, there is a visit to the haunting Dachau Concentration Camp.

We then spend a day at Nuremberg to view the former Nazi rally areas, "Kongresshalle" and the extraordinary Museum of Fascination and Terror. We hope to visit the Palace of Justice where the Nuremberg War Trials were held and learn more about Nuremberg´s wider history. On the fourth day, we travel to the Bavarian Alps to visit the Führer´s preferred seat of power at the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden, where so many of Hitler´s fateful meetings and decisions occurred. Lunch will be at the famous "Eagle's Nest". Your guide on this tour is Ian Passingham.
