The Holocaust
22 - 29 July 2008

This is a journey of pilgrimage and remembrance to a place and time of major importance in 20th century history. Your guides on this tour are Peter Knox and Thomas Kacer, a Polish survivor of the Holocaust.

From 1933, when Hitler came to power, until 1945 when his Nazi regime in Germany was finally destroyed, up to twenty million people were eliminated within the Greater Reich. Six million were of the Jewish faith; over one million Jews were children under ten years old. The ethnic cleansing of Nazi controlled countries resulted in the establishment of Concentration Camps where inmates were quite literally worked to death as slave labourers. In 1942 Goering, Hitler’s deputy, ordered a ‘final solution’ to the Jewish problem and from then on Death Camps or Concentration Camps sprang up, equipped with the apparatus of mass destruction. This was the time of the Holocaust.

Krakow
Krakow
Our Holocaust tour recalls the tragedy of those years and visits the sites of death camps in Poland; Treblinka, near Warsaw; Majdanek near Lublin and the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, west of Krakow. At the memorials that keep their memory of the Holocaust victims alive, we pay our own respects to those who perished.

Although it has seen an enormous amount of tragedy, Poland is essentially a vivacious country and we see much of cultural and scenic interest as we drive across the county, visit the Salt Mine at Wieliczka and the famous old cities of Warsaw, Lubin and Krakow and enjoy the food in some of the local restaurants.
