A tour of Berlin and south to the Leipzig area. The WW2 air war over the 'Big City' by the RAF and our USAAF allies, with round the clock bombing to break the will of the German people. We look at the defences above and below ground, and the last resting place of the airmen that didn't make it. Some of those shot down spent the rest of the war in the most famous POW camp of them all - Colditz. We tour Colditz castle prisoner-of-war camp and marvel at the ingenious escape plans and the spirit of the inveterate escapers. A prison where chivalry still existed!
From Leipzig, we travel to the huge camp and tunnel complex in the Kohnstein Mountain at Nordhausen. The amazing technology of the V rocket, particularly the V-2 rocket, built using brutal slave labour at the Dora-Mittelbau Nazi Concentration camp. | ||

After the war the Iron Curtain descended to separate Europe for over forty years. We visit sites associated with the Berlin of East and West - the Berlin Airlift and the Berlin Wall. We look at life for Germans living in Leipzig in East Germany, and the control of the State Security Service - the Stasi. We will walk around central Berlin to sites associated with the Nazi era. Your guide is John Grimwood who has designed many popular tours for Holts. |
