The Frontier West

10 - 22 August 2008 |
The Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains of the American West were the last places where Euro-American traders, trappers, miners, and ranchers, supported and protected by U.S. soldiers, wrested control of frontier land and its resources from the warring, nomadic Native American Indian tribesmen of the region - the mighty Sioux, Cheyennes, and Arapahos and the tragic Nez Perce. Names like Custer and Sitting Bull, Fetterman and Crazy Horse, Crook and Dull Knife, Chief Joseph and Nelson Miles, Forsyth and Big Foot fill the pages of the region's history, the great scene played out under the Big Sky of Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota, with breathtaking panoramic vistas of rolling plains, white-tipped towering peaks, and free-flowing rivers.
"Featured are visits to forts, battlefields and Indian heritage sites that tell the story, including Fort Phil Kearny, the command post on the Bozeman Trail, the Fetterman Battlefield, where 81 men were wiped out by Red Cloud's Oglalas, and the Rosebud Battlefield where Gen. George Crook and Crazy Horse fought to a standstill in one of the opening salvos of the Great Sioux War of 1876. Special attention will be given to Little Bighorn Battlefield (Custer's Last Stand), one of America's best-known historic sites, and the tragedy at Wounded Knee, which marked the end of resistance by the Sioux Indians."

Participants will visit America's great scenic wonders, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, and view the two mountain sculptures of the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. A raft ride down the Snake River, a rodeo, cowboy grub and western music, a visit to Deadwood, the wickedest town the West ever knew, talks with Lakota dancers, story tellers and artists, and commentary by John D. McDermott, author of eight books on the Native American Indian wars, will make this a rewarding trip into the past of the American West.
