The Crimean War - Holts Battlefield Tours

Fears that Russia would take over the declining Ottoman Empire and upset the European balance of power drove Britain and France to declare war against her in 1854. The Crimea campaign that followed revealed many administrative shortfalls in the British Army.

Over 4000 British soldiers died in battle in the Crimea but some 13,500 were lost through disease. There were also great acts of gallantry including that of the Guards Brigade at Alma and the "thin red line" of infantry at Balaklava that earned immortal fame for the 93rd Highlanders. This was followed by the charge of the Heavy Brigade that was soon overshadowed by the courageous but disastrous advance by the Light Brigade. Then follows the siege of Sevastopol where the bloody fighting, severe climate and the ravages of cholera and other diseases all took a heavy toll.

The relaxation of restrictions on travel in the Ukraine now makes the Crimea easily accessible. Visit these battlefields that were immortalized by Lord Tennyson’s famous poem and the despatches of WH Russell for The Times. Accompanied by military historian Colonel Peter Knox we will relive the triumphs and toils of the soldiers in the Crimea in more congenial weather than they endured.
