Wellington in Portugal

In August 1808 Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later Field Marshall, the Duke of Wellington) landed at Mondego Bay with a tiny British army and inflicted two stunning defeats on the French at Rolica and Vimeiro. Superseded by senior generals from England, the Convention of Cintra led to Wellesley's withdrawal to England to explain himself for what was considered a shameful letting the French ‘off the hook’. His name cleared, Wellesley was once again appointed to command in Portugal after Sir John Moore's death and the evacuation of his army from Corunna.

With the victory at Oporto in May 1809, the French were driven from Portugal and Wellington pursued them into Spain in July, leaving his engineers behind to construct a top-secret series of defensive lines covering the approaches to Lisbon. Led by military historian Major Gordon Corrigan, we follow Wellington and his army through those early Portuguese battles, examining the actions, the ground, the locations and the equipment, and then we rejoin them fourteen months later as Wellesley, now Viscount Wellington of Talavera, withdrew back into
Portugal, fighting the delaying battle of Busaco on the way, and luring the French onto the now completed and impregnable lines of Torres Vedras.
This tour will include museums and locations associated with the campaigns and there will be time to enjoy some free time in both Lisbon and Oporto. |
