Edinburgh

Edinburgh is unique among Scotland's cities with its multicultural population and its blend of ancient and modern, which sets it apart. Located on the southern edge of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is studded with volcanic hills. The castle dominates the city's heart set on its black, volcanic crag. Its superb architecture ranges from ancient churches to Victorian masterpieces. In traditional Scottish fashion the occasional display of kilts and bagpipes will leave you feeling warm inside.
Edinburgh Castle
This famous castle has St Margaret's Chapel dating from the 12th Century through to the Scottish National War Memorial erected after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the famous 15th Century gun Mons Meg, the One O'Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland. There are guided tours provided by the castle stewards.

St Giles' Cathedral
The cathedral was founded in the 1120's and was the church of John Knox during the Reformation. Highlights of your visit would include the beautiful stained glass windows and the impressive Rieger organ, which was installed in 1992. St Giles' is situated on the historic Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House.

Our Dynamic Earth Science Centre
The exciting “Our Dynamic Earth Centre” provides plenty of interactive entertainment for children and adults. It's pre-historic, volcanic, tropical, Antarctic, dynamic and fantastic. It explores the extremes of our planet taking you back in time to witness the Big Bang, feel the earth shake from an erupting volcano, fly over glaciers, feel the chill of polar ice and get caught in a tropical rainstorm.

The Edinburgh Dungeon
The gruesome goings-on of the past are brought back to life. Have fun delving back into the darkest chapters of history. Visit “Vampires: Fact or Fiction” and explore the facts surrounding the myths. Enter into battle with one of the great Scottish Clans in “Clan Wars”. Find yourself in the plague ravaged streets of old Edinburgh or on trial in an 18th Century court of law.

Royal Botanic Garden - Edinburgh
Locally known as the “Botanics” and established in 1670. The garden is acknowledged to be one of the finest in the world where over 6% of all known plants can be found. Among the many features are the Chinese Hillside, the world-famous Rock Garden and the Palm House.

Art Galleries
Edinburgh abounds with galleries to suit all tastes from the National Gallery of Scotland and Scottish National Portrait Gallery to the Dada and Surrealist collection in the Dean Gallery.

Museums
There is a wide variety to choose from. The Museum of Scotland presents the history of Scotland, its land, its people and their achievements, the Museum of Childhood is described as “the noisiest museum in the world” and the People's Story is a museum with a difference. The lives, work and leisure of the ordinary people of Edinburgh are told through the use of oral history, reminiscence and written sources.

Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions
On this site are five attractions ranging from the Camera Obscura, Edinburgh's oldest visitor attraction, panoramic views across the city with free telescopes, the Magic Gallery, Light Fantastic, the UK's only permanent gallery dedicated to holography and Edinburgh Vision, seeing the city in 3D from the 1850s to the present day.

The Real Mary King's Close
This is a warren of hidden streets beneath the City Chambers on the Royal Mile, where people lived, worked and died between the 17th and 19th centuries. A fascinating place to discover how the people lived in these closes through the centuries.
