Somme Walks
A three or four day schools first world war tour to walk the old front lines of the First day of the Somme battle, 1st July 1916. Almost 60,000 casualties on that morning, with 20,000 of them dead. Why did it happen? We study the fate of the Pals battalions, the Empire troops, the old Regulars of the British army and Kitcheners keen young volunteers.

A chance to see the ground and walk in the footsteps of those heroes of the First World War. We will finish at the great Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme battle, designed by Lutyens.
Somme Walks Format - One walk on first and last day. Two walks on other days. The walking will mainly be on paths and tracks and each walk will be between 2 and 3 miles.
Note. Students must have rain cover clothing and suitable walking footwear. If the weather is particularly bad the programme can be adjusted to some extent.
