Ypres was the main British battlefield in WW1 and this tour gives students the opportunity to study and explore the battlefields of Flanders.
This tour departs from the school and overnights on the North Sea Ferry to Zeebrugge. It then spends a day around Ypres seeing Tyne Cot & the Battlefield Areas at Hooge before returning to Zeebrugge for an evening departure and return to Hull. This tour is ideal for giving students a taste of the WW1 battlefields.

This tour will travel via overnight P&O ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge.
We depart from school, arriving in Hull at 4.30 pm ready to board the 6.30pm crossing to Zeebrugge. We have our evening meal on the ferry and enjoy the facilities available on board before spending the night in our cabins.

After arriving in Zeebrugge and an early breakfast on the ferry, we continue our journey into Belgium, and travel to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British War Cemetery in the world where we focus on the subject of Remembrance and can appreciate the scale of the losses incurred during the First World War.
We then travel to Hooge. Here, we look at the subject of Trench Warfare on the Western Front. We visit a set of full-size replica trenches where students can walk in the trench, see how it is designed and contrast the German approach to that of the British. Students can also safely handle WW1 artefacts under the supervision of one of our Specialist Battlefield Guides.
We spend time in the Hooge Crater Museum, where we look at the subject of Medicine and Warfare, and have our lunch provided in the on-site café.
We have a short battlefield walk up onto the Bellewaarde Ridge where there was extensive mine warfare activity from 1915. Here we visit mine craters and look at the ‘war underground’.
We then visit the frontline town of Ypres with a visit to the Menin Gate to look at the impressive Memorial to the Missing of WW1 before spending some free time in Ypres.
We travel to Zeebrugge and board the ferry ready for our 7pm crossing. We have our evening meal on the ferry and enjoy the facilities available on board before spending the night in our cabins.

After breakfast at our accommodation and picking up our packed lunches we enjoy some free time in Ypres.
We then board our coach and visit Essex Farm Cemetery, where we return to the subject of Medicine in War, seeing some original Advanced Dressing Station dugouts, looking at Casualty Evacuation. We also examine war poetry as Canadian medic, John McCrae, wrote the now immortal ‘In Flanders Fields’ poem here in 1915. Finally, we look at the story of ‘Teenage Tommies’ and see the grave of Valentine Joe Strudwick, who fell near Ypres aged only 15.
We visit the excellent Memorial Museum Passchendaele at Zonnebeke, complete with underground dugouts and reconstructed trenches where we have our packed lunches before we begin our return home.
We travel to Zeebrugge and board the ferry ready for our 7pm crossing. We have our evening meal on the ferry and enjoy the facilities available on board before spending the night in our cabins.

After breakfast at our accommodation and picking up our packed lunches we depart for the Somme.
We begin our day at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. Here we visit the new museum, look at the Memorialisation of the First World War, and the subject of missing soldiers in WW1.
We visit the Ulster Tower to look at one of the battlefields fought over on the first day of the Battle of the Somme where we have our lunch. We also go into Thiepval Wood and see trenches and positions uncovered by a team of archaeologists. Here we have the opportunity to safely handle WW1 objects, lead by your Specialist Guide.
In the battlefield cemeteries here we look at the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and on the high ground above the Ancre Valley look at the landscape and the importance of high ground on a battlefield. We end the day at the Lochnagar Mine Crater at La Boisselle to examine the ‘war underground’ and mine warfare on the Western Front in WW1.
We then return to Ypres and our accommodation, enjoying an evening meal in a local restaurant.
